MEPHISTO “Metal of Death” (CD, Bestial Burst Records 2005)

Debut Cd by this Italian metal maniaxx on Bestial Burst… Guitars, bass, and drum duties are split up between 4 of out five band members… so you get to hear their different styles of playing on their songs.. with a playing time of 37 mins and 12 songs … this release is pretty much straight forward and to the point… Songs are midpaced attaxx or faster thrashing attaxx in the ancient vein of Hellhammer, Sodom, Celtic Frost, without being a rip off… In the bands own words Mephisto plays metal of death, play it loud and hard, play for bangers… die for death… Recommended release to those who crave the primitive, ancient sound of the metal bands of the 80s metal scene…

MEPHISTO “Metal of Death” (CD, Bestial Burst Records 2005)

Blast from the Past! First you could imagine, that “Metal of Death” has been put on tape about in the middle of eighties, but the cover sheet tells you that studio sessions have taken their place in 2004 and 2005.
Well, the truth is that Italian Mephisto is pure old school, and on this album you can taste the true feeling of Metal!

The band started in 2003 as a side project, and I guess the band didn’t waste much time for seeking what kind of music they want to play. These five demons have loaded twelve songs on “Metal of Death”, and everyone is like taken from the time, when vinyl was the king, leather and denim only choices for clothes, spikes and chains everyday customs and Venom, Hellhammer and Sodom the elite of brutal metal. These midtempoish and rocking songs don’t have any false gimmicks, but they drill their way to
listeners’ brains with simple structures. Some horror-inspired lead
guitars bring some spice to this cauldron, and also the vocals of singer Manth are splendid with his Italian accent.

Of course you can have many opinions about the greatness of this album. That concept of those three legends mentioned before is so simple and good, that usually every band making their music like them sounds automatically good, although in most cases the time gnaws quickly out the empty nature of the music.
However, Mephisto has managed to create the
true rocking, rolling, insane attitude, what you need in music like this. Sadly there isn’t any true hit songs on “Metal of Death” – Lemmy-inspired “Iron Cross” gets close – and you could have shortened the album a bit, but otherwise “Metal of Death” has the right vibe including great sounds and nice, chaotic playing.
This is authentic worshipping of Metal, so Tom G. Warrior – who has trying to make a comeback for years – should take
some notes from this band.

MEPHISTO (ITA) – Tyrant’s Return (MC, Satanic Supremacy Distro 2004)

Mephisto deal in simplistic, blackened thrash (or thrashy black?) metal, hugely influenced by Hellhammer and Celtic Frost, very competently played and very well worth a listen. Melodic solos that appear once in a while keep in with the unassuming riffs, and the throaty vocals complement the music perfectly. What can be of harm to the music, though, is the slightly clattering production, but that is not so much of a problem in my case. Look out for the upcoming full length, indeed, meanwhile act fast to obtain this demo since it’s limited to a mere 113 copies.

MEPHISTO – promo 8/2004 – adv trax

Where their first trax and the first offering they had shows a high CELTIC FROST influence, now I would say that Italy’s MEPHISTO was becoming a bit more unique. I don’t mean that they change their style, or that they haven’t before they’re own original sound, hell no, but their new trax offer a great and new aggressive touch and the vokills are more directly, brutal and aggressive too, with more screams. Black Metal with a lethal touch to Thrash, like it was played in the late 80ies, like a fist in the face. The songz here are for an upcoming split 7ep with Italian blacksters The True ENDLESS. Every time I had speak with an Italian he said me that their is no real scene in Italy, then I must say, be just proud on acts like MORTUARY DRAPE, MEPHISTO or (old) NECRODEATH. To everyone which haven’t listen to MEPHISTO, check them out and get a massacre storm through your brain.
