MEPHISTO – too loud for the Hell – Rehearsal tape

I guess when mentioning the band name MEPH(F?)ISTO many readers will think of the Swedish cult act that used to spread some awesome material back in the glorious 80s. Yeah, this group nowadays can be considered as hugely original, unique combo that unfortunately never got too much recognition (besides of some old die-hards)… Nevertheless, the MEPHISTO here hail from Italy and what they present us on these eight tunes of utter hell, is pure and simple Death/Thrash Metal, heavily inspired by HELLHAMMER, old BATHORY and very early CELTIC FROST. Additionally I`d even mention cult acts like i.e. BULLDOZER or ONSLAUGHT as influences (at least concerning the instrumental section, the voice is very much a bastard between HELLHAMMER`s Satanic Slaughter and Quorthon. Despite the fact that we got to deal with a pure rehearsal room recording, it`s sure to say that the sound is definitely fine, sounding very underground and honest. The cassette was originally given away for free, I received it through tape-trading, so I guess it shouldn`t be difficult to get if you`re in the “right” circles, hehe…

MEPHISTO – Metal of Death – CD – Bestial Burst

The title says everything! Filthy Metal of (motor)Death, pure old school Death/Black Metal worship. Expect something like Venom, just more filthier baptized with the darkness of Hellhammer and the raw agression of Martire. But no retro shit or poser copying. Classic riffs, genious drumming and crushing vokills meets on varied tempi’s and breaks. The production is really good, yet underground but nevertheless professional. Layout is simple but unique, coverart is excellent with a pix reminding on Bestial Mockery’s artworx. Dont confuse these italian hellbangers with the old swedish deathforce. If you are a die hard old school worshipper of death you need that. Get it and you will fall into nostalgic ancient feelings. Beside of Morbid Upheaval most intresting Death Metal Mafia Italy has to offer. To end the review with one of their songtitles “again at war with Satan”.

MEPHISTO “Metal of Death” (CD, Bestial Burst Records 2005)

10 tracks of raw death/black played the old way, and by old way I mean 80’s demo sounds. Think Sodom, Hellhammer, Beheirt, Slaughter, etc. The riffs and feeling are total old school and I love the guitar sound and the vocals are pure hell. The production is fuckin raw like bands of this nature should be. No tough guy vocals, no groove metal, no jump riffs, no dance parts, just pure death. A must for metal person into the old school.
