Blood Of The Ancient

MEPHISTO – Tyrant’s Return – Demo tape

I cannot tell you anything about the layout of this tape as I only got a copy of it – however, the cover of the `Too Loud For The Hell` tape was very great…! On `Tyrant`s Return` I`m able to check out the first proper recorded MEPHISTO songs, and they`re also in that straight and very simply played vein like the above reviewed rehearsal was. Hm, but it`s some kind of really confusing situation right now: On the one hand it`s good to listen to these songs in a clearer way, but sometimes I`m missing the raw approach of the rehearsal room recordings… However, MEPHISTO manage to execute truly spiteful, misanthropic tunes of extreme bizarreness. The Italians are by no way a plain HELLHAMMER-rip-off, the group manages to create an own way of interpreting their malevolent hate tirades. MEPHISTO walk upon a promising path, but after a certain while their music seems to get a bit monotonous: If the Italians could change this weak point, we should be prepared for some real masterpiece releases in future…!

Music Extreme – The Virtual Magazine Of Extreme Music

MEPHISTO “Tyrant’s Return” (MC, Tour de Garde 2004)

A combination of pure aggressive black metal with some death metal elements, but always emphasizing the brutality of the compositions. The band has some old school influences in their music but they have taken them to a more modern sound. Extreme vocals are essential here giving an even darker feeling to the music of this “Tyrant´s return”. One thing that I liked a lot is the use of the toms in the drums in many compositions that give a different feeling to some parts, sort of more tribal, fitting really well the music and adding originality. This sort of drumming is not that common in this style of music because this guy does fast rhythms but then adds a lot of toms work. The sound is raw but effective, specially on guitars. There is a cover by legend´s Slaughter her called “F.O.D.” that adds even more points to this release. Pure aggression and darkness.
