APOLLYON – The First Ukrainian Web-Zine Of Unholy Music
MEPHISTO “Metal of Death” (CD, Bestial Burst Records 2005)
Rather new band from hot and solar Italy plays far not iridescent old wave Death-Black Metal. Apparently from the name they don’t try to invent a bicycle, however, zealously honors a genre canons and authenticity of a style. Their music is rather simple, but also as much interesting, remembered and picturesque. MEPHISTO’s style varies from simple Death of the beginnings of 90s (for example, ASPHYX), up to not fast, rhythmical and dark Black Metal. The album is recorded qualitatively, sounds well, and the music as well as the sound has rawness feeling and a sepulchral cold that pleases personally me a lot: the band has the atmosphere. On a CD cover is a collage from the German cross, the decayed skull full of nails, and chains. But here all is simple, drawn with black ink and pen-type (like covers of THRONEUM, BLASPHEMY, NAKED WHIPER, etc.). In end of the review I wish to put the words written on the back side of the booklet (to be understood for all): “We play Metal of Death, play it hard and loud… We live for Metal, play for bangers… Die for Death! The Metal returns!”
